Tokamak Energy, based in Oxford UK, has announced that its ST-40 spherical tokamak reactor has attained a temperature of 100 million degrees Celsius, which it claims is the threshold for commercial fusion energy.
For more than 75 years, the promise of a viable fusion reactor has stayed frustratingly out of reach, with one appearing to be just a few decades away for decades. The ramifications of such a reactor technology, and its promise to provide civilization with a virtually infinite supply of inexpensive, clean energy, are so significant that scientists and engineers are still working on it.
